Abstract

Psychological autopsy is a method used to determine factors that preceded a suicide. During this process relevant medical documentation, including records of previous mental and physical disorders, is collected as well as informations from an interview with the next of kin. A semi-structured interview is applied, whitch combines open and closed type questions, and during whitch a strict ethical code must be followed, considering the sensitive subject matter. The use of this method has uncovered many risk factors, the most significant being mental disorders, specifically mood disorders and addiction disorders. This method comes with certain methodological issues, considering standardisation of the interview, reliability and validity.
