Although the German and Croatian legal languages are based on different cultures and legal systems, and the word-formation systems of the German and Croatian languages differ greatly, the influences of German legal terminology on the Croatian language of law are still recognizable today due to the historical foundation of the Croatian legal system in Austrian law. How strong the influences of the German language are can best be seen in the translations of expressions of a metaphorical and rhetorical character, for these expressions should be specific to each culture, and thus to each language individually. To prove the hypothesis of this paper that the German legal terminology strongly influenced the Croatian language of the law, this study investigates Croatian and German legal terms of a metaphorical character. The author uses the method of qualitative text analysis, quantitative and comparative method, and analyzes examples of culturally nuanced metaphorical expressions, collocations and phrases in German and Croatian in the field of criminal procedure law. The corpus of the research comprises the text of the German Code of Criminal Procedure of 15 November 2019, Status: 1 September 2020, Official Gazette I, 1604 (http://dejure.org/gesetze/StPO ), and the Law on Amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Croatia of 17 December 2019 (https://narodne-novine.nn.hr/clanci/sluzbeni/2019_12_126_2530.html).
