Sažetak
Entomophagy (insect consumption) is rare in Western countries, but this practice is still widespread in the rest of the world. Most commonly consumed species are beetles (Coleoptera), caterpillars (Lepidoptera), bees, wasps and ants (Hymenoptera), as well as locusts and crickets (Orthoptera), but more than 1,400 species of insects are considered edible. Insects are a good source of most nutrients necessary for human consumption, although the composition varies depending on the species and developmental stage of the insect. Insects belong to the group of mini-livestock, and their production is simple, fast and more efficient than the production of other species. The potential for further development of this branch of animal husbandry is great, and production models of some species have already been developed. Insects can be consumed in many ways, either whole or processed, or as specially prepared delicacies and represent an important source of nutrients in many parts of the world. They belong to the group of "new foods", and in the entire European Union only the production and consumption of Tenebrio molitor (mealworm beetle) is allowed, although some countries allow the cultivation of other species.
