Abstract

The Republic of Croatia’s 2021 Population Census determined that 51% of the population was female, while the number of women in the companies’ ownership structure was increasing slightly. Out of a total number of companies in the Republic of Croatia in 2023, 21.4% were exclusively owned by women. In case of family farms, according to the Farmers’ Register data, this number was slightly higher, and in 2024, the women were the owners in 28.62% of cases. There are many reasons and motives why women decide to be the entrepreneurs, especially those in the rural areas. The paper describes the motivational factors and attitudes of women involved in various forms of entrepreneurship. Primary data were collected while applying a survey method and a structured questionnaire (n = 33), and the target group consisted of the members of Association of Exemplary Croatian Rural Women. The respondents mostly agreed with the statement that a greater opportunity to participate in decision-making was important to them (M = 4.33) when starting an entrepreneurial venture, followed by a more creative, interesting, or dynamic work, better working conditions and organization, security, and permanent employment. The lowest scores were allocated to the statement that proving personal knowledge and abilities was the least important to them (M = 3.91) when starting an entrepreneurial venture.
