Abstract
Biogas plants are an important component of a sustainable energy system. This paper analyzes the challenges faced by the biogas sector during the energy crisis in the period from 2021 to 2023. The war in Ukraine caused a significant increase in the price of corn silage, which negatively affected the plants that rely on this raw material. To mitigate the increased costs, many biogas plants took advantage of more favorable energy prices on the open market and exited the incentive system of the Croatian Energy Market Operator (HROTE). In addition to an analysis of secondary sources concerning the data on market conditions and state intervention during the crisis, the paper is based on an interview with a biogas‐sector representative.
