Abstract
In the history of Croatian and Hungarian philology there are open questions about the contributions to grammaticography and grammaticology of both languages in earlier periods, especially when it comes to the beginnings of normative regulations and descriptions of the Croatian and/or Hungarian language. Newer research shows that the beginnings of the Croatian component of Hungarian grammar in the 19th century should be brought closer in time to the Illyrian movement in Triune Kingdom, more precisely to the year 1846, when Josip Bielak published the Theoretical-Practical Grammar of the Hungarian Language in Zagreb. This paper analyzes its structure, the grammaticographical models on which it is based, and the methodological determinants of the grammaticological approach. Since it is a grammar that serves as a textbook for learning Croatian, not only Hungarian, the Croatian language as the starting language is compared to Babukic’s Basic Grammar of the Slavic Dialect of Illyria (1836) and Mazuranic’s Foundations of the Illyrian and Latin Languages for Beginners (1839, 21842), two grammar manuals embedded in the revival language foundations. It is also noted in the author’s preface that it is the first grammar of the Hungarian language written with a codified linguistic and orthographic norm.
