Sažetak

The article analyzes Serhiy Zhadan’s novel Voroshilovgrad within the framework of the Ukrainian literary canon, post-Soviet transition, and mythological structures. Particular focus is placed on the motifs of emptiness, wind, and space, which form the existential framework of the novel and are interpreted as key elements in understanding the crisis of masculinity and the protagonist’s maturation process. The novel is read from a dual perspective: as a narrative of return and territorial defense, and as a contemporary myth of space, community, memory, and initiation. The motif of male brotherhood and football plays a distinctive role, further emphasizing the ritual and mythical dimensions of the text. The analysis shows that the novel's poetics are grounded in the Kharkiv literary tradition, intertwining avant-garde, modernist, and postmodernist elements, while Zhadan’s oeuvre is positioned within the broader context of Ukrainian literary tradition and cultural memory. Emphasis is placed on intertextuality, the ironic deconstruction of the canon, and the reinterpretation of mythological patterns, with Voroshilovgrad functioning as a palimpsest of both collective and personal memory.
