Forgotten Graves of the Warriors of World War I: Example of Pakrac

Sažetak
Although the logic of the functioning of public health within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy required a hospital cemetery to be attached to the large Royal Provincial Hospital in Pakrac (1898), there were only speculations about its exact location until documents on military cemeteries of the participants of World War I in Croatia were accidentally discovered in the Archives of Yugoslavia in Belgrade. Among other things, there was mention of the “Šeovica Hospital Cemetery”, where at least 70 soldiers had been buried, and the documents mention two other soldiers buried in other cemeteries of the market town of Pakrac: one of them was buried in the Jewish cemetery, the other in the old Roman Catholic cemetery. Drawing on his knowledge of local topography and the situation in the field as well as of the drafts in archival documents, the author determined the location of the wartime graves and provided proof of which part of the modern Orthodox cemetery at Gavrinica the “hospital cemetery” as well as the “wartime cemetery” were situated, regardless of what was registered in the official cadastral documents.
Both burial grounds are situated in the cadastral municipality of Šeovica, from which the name of the cemetery used during World War I was derived; however, at present this name is completely forgotten, as are the wartime graves, due to the fact that the old Roman Catholic cemetery does not exist anymore. At present its position is occupied by a residential street; on the Jewish and the hospital cemetery young forests are growing, while the wartime cemetery is being used as arable land.
