Abstract
Despite legal prohibitions, numerous studies consistently confirm adolescents’
involvement in gambling activities, with early initiation being a significant predictor
of problem gambling in adulthood. The main aim of this paper is to
present key prevalence indicators of gambling among younger adolescents,
based on a sample of N = 1,655 first- and second-grade high school students
from Croatia. A set of questions on students’ personal characteristics,
the Gambling Activities Questionnaire (Ricijaš et al., 2011, 2016), and the
GPSS subscale to assess harmful psychosocial consequences of gambling
(CAGI; Tremblay et al., 2010) were used. Compared to previous studies conducted
in Croatia, the results indicate a downward trend in both the frequency
and severity of gambling-related harm among younger adolescents.
The findings are discussed in the context of increased public awareness,
legislative changes, and long-term investments in school-based prevention
programmes.
