Sažetak

Pig production in the Republic of Croatia has undergone significant changes in recent decades, both in terms of production and organization, as well as in the implementation of breeding and selection procedures. The fact is that the volume of production and the total number of pigs have decreased significantly, and the reasons for this situation lie in the consequences of the state of war, inadequate adaptation to market business conditions, exposure to global market and biosecurity risks, and the lack of a clear vision of the holders of agricultural policy in the strategic positioning of pig farming as one of the most important agricultural branches in our country. The implementation of breeding and selection procedures has made a significant contribution to the development of pig farming. The foundations of the national breeding program in pig farming were laid in the mid-1990s, and with minor amendments and changes in the method of genetic evaluation of animals, it is still applied today. In the last 20 years, pigs in the national breeding program have been evaluated using BLUP or the best linear unbiased prediction method, which replaced the selection indices used until then. As a result of the application of genetic evaluation by BLUP, there have been significant changes in the population structure and genetic composition of pigs. During the past period, there has also been a significant increase in the breeding of indigenous pig breeds, the Turopolje pig, the Black Slavonian pig and the Banija šara pig, and the traditional Mangulica breed is increasingly being bred. The survival of these breeds is based on breeding and genetic revitalization programs, and breeders are awarded financial support to encourage the reproduction of these breeds and prevent their disappearance. In general, it can be said that pig farming in Croatia has a perspective and that the current situation can be improved if clear strategic guidelines are defined and Croatian pig farming is transformed towards sustainable production systems that will be based on standardization and high finalization of pork, primarily through numerous protected and traditional products and through the gastronomic channels of the tourism sector
