Metric characteristics of the teacher attitudes toward teaching students with dyslexia scale

Abstract

Research on the development and validation of scales that measure teachers’ attitudes towards teaching students with dyslexia, both globally and in the Croatian language, is rarely represented. Therefore, the aim of this paper was: (1) to construct a scale that measures teachers’ attitudes towards teaching students with dyslexia, (2) to determine its factor structure and reliability and (3) to determine intercorrelations between subscales, as well as their relation to socio-demographic indicators of teachers. 431 teachers from six counties of the Republic of Croatia participated in the research. Exploratory factor analysis confirmed the construct validity of the scale based on the three-component model of attitudes in the cognitive, negative affective and behavioral components, with high reliability (Cronbach alpha coefficients >.85). The results indicate the expected, statistically significant, mutual positive correlation of the cognitive and behavioral subscales, with a negative correlation with the negative affective subscale, and a low positive correlation of the cognitive subscale with years of teaching experience and years of formal teacher education. In conclusion, the constructed measuring instrument of teachers’ positive attitudes towards teaching students with dyslexia has satisfactory measurement characteristics, confirms the expected intercorrelations between subscales, as well as a specific pattern of relation to socio-demographic variables.
