Sažetak

The writer and politician Ivan Dežman (Rijeka 1841 – Zagreb 1873) distinguished
himself through his public activities as one of the key figures who
significantly influenced Croatia in the nineteenth century. Although he spent
most of his life in Zagreb, his legacy also marks the cultural history of his native
Rijeka, where he first began to develop patriotic and literary ideas. He was
the author of numerous popular science articles as well as a dictionary of medical
terminology, making him the first national medical writer. In his literary
work, he explored historical poetry, the romantic epic, lyrical and epic poems,
and short stories. His literary works were primarily published in the journal
Vienac, which he also edited following the death of Ivan Perkovac, from 17
April 1871 until 11 May 1872, when he was succeeded by Franjo Marković.
The focus of this paper is on Dežman’s efforts to educate readers about the
necessity of health care. By combining medical practice with a literary mode
of expression, he developed a distinct style of communicating medical content
within the framework of utilitarian needs and, in particular, the patriotic tendencies
of the period.
