Self-assessment of pedagogical, didactic and professional competencies of Music teachers for leading musical creativity activities

Sažetak
The aim of the study was to examine how music teachers assess the importance of pedagogical, didactic, and professional competencies for leading musical creativity activities, to explore teachers’ self-assessments of these competencies, and to determine whether these self-assessments differ with regard to the implementation of creativity activities in practice and years of teaching experience. The study included 254 music teachers from every Croatian county. The results indicate that music teachers perceive pedagogical, didactic, and professional competencies important for the implementation of creativity activities. The highest self-assessment score was reported for three competencies within the domain of pedagogical competence. The findings further show that teachers who implement creativity activities in their teaching practice rate professional competencies as more important than teachers who do not implement creativity activities. In addition, these teachers assess the majority of their pedagogical, didactic, and professional competencies as more developed compared to teachers who do not engage in creativity activities in music teaching. It was found that teaching experience affects only certain aspects of teachers’ competence in leading musical creative activities. The results suggest that music teachers in upper primary general education demonstrate characteristics of constructivist teachers. Finally, the author emphasizes the importance of additional professional development in the field of musical creativity in order to further develop the professional competencies of music teachers.
