Abstract

Van Hiele theory of the development of geometric reasoning presumes a level of student thinking in the field of geometry, which does not depend on the age of students. This paper briefly presents Hiele’s theory of the development of geometric reasoning and geometric content through the teaching of mathematics in primary schools, which should lead to the development of students’ geometric reasoning. According to Hiele’s theory, appropriate activities develop students’ geometric reasoning and enable students’ progress through levels. The paper presents the survey conducted among 316 students in lower grades of primary school, with the aim to determine whether students make progress according to Hiele’s levels in the first four grades of primary school.
