Abstract

In this paper, we investigated approaches to evaluation within the music education
system, including all the important aspects of the evaluation process.
Regarding music theory subjects, we analyzed and compared the characteristics
of diagnostic, formative, and summative evaluation. We problematised
the relationship between exam results and final grades and the realization
of exams in front of an examination committee, which are one of the main
features of the music education system. Furthermore, we considered the specifics
of music theory subjects, which are certainly not only ‘theoretical’ but
are also analytical, practical, and creative in certain, although not precisely
defined proportions. The paper also concludes with other evaluation categories,
encompassing evaluation criteria, forms, methods, and approaches.
