Abstract

Student motivation and how to motivate students to learn mathematics and actively participate in mathematics classes is a topic that has always been of interest to teachers. Learning mathematics is characterised by internal motivation, solving homework and metacognitive experiences. As previous research has shown, the majority of students believe that they need mathematics for life and for their further education- However, a small group of students learn mathematics in order to create better connections and deepen their knowledge. This paper will present the connection between problem solving in mathematics classes and motivation to learn mathematics - specifically, whether teaching mathematics through problem solving improves students' motivation to learn mathematics. As a result of the research presented in this paper, we shall also provide recommendations to help teachers work on motivating students to learn mathematics, and to help students acquire certain skills such as mathematical literacy and problem solving.
