Abstract

The objective of this essay is to analyse the space of the city of Barcelona in novels that revolve around migratory experiences written by authors of different backgrounds. For this purpose, the works of Carlos Liscano (Uruguay), Najat El Hachmi (Morocco), Brenda Navarro (Mexico), and Margaryta Yakovenko (Ukraine) have been selected. The readings show how the literary portrait of the urban landscape is conditioned by the experience of the main characters and the dichotomy of non-place/home, multiculturalism/exclusivity, the Barcelona of the lowest social strata and the Barcelona for tourists. Furthermore, it relies on sensory references and on the analysis of the interrelationship between expectations of migration, characterized by loneliness and marginalization, and the multilayered experience of the city described in these texts.
