Language and Orthography in the First Year of Glas Istre

The Croatian language and its process of standardisation in Istria are topics that remain underexplored. In Istria, newspapers played an important role in popularizing the language and served as direct messengers and advocates of the Croatian language in a region that has witnessed shifts between different languages and cultures for many centuries, in which Croatian often found itself in a subordinate position. The social and political circumstances, as well as the fact that Istria was separated from the rest of the country, influenced the process of language standardisation in Istria. The newspaper Glas Istre, which is still published today, was first published in 1943. Its influence has been significant in many respects for the entire Istrian region. In the beginning, it was published monthly as a publication of the National Liberation Movement in Istria. The analysis of various linguistic levels and the orthography of first-year volumes of Glas Istre (1943–1944) can offer insights into the state of the language that was accessible to a wide readership and had a significant impact on everyday expression, as well as on the linguistic and orthographic development of the average Istrian. The topics concerning the importance of the (Croatian) language also reveal the care devoted to it in Istria.
