EUPHEMISM IN ANIĆ'S DICTIONARY

Abstract

Euphemism is one of the lexicographical marks for loaded words in Anić dictionaries. Anić defines euphemism as a «milder word». The euphemisms are hard to identify, the proof for it is the fact that we can find only 25 euphemisms in the Anić Dictionary of Croatian Language. From socioliguistical point of view, the euphemisms are «positively» marked words. They are used instead of the words which are considered inapropriate from the social point of view because they can hurt somebody's feelings (in order to save someone's face). In other words, the euphemisms substitute so called «negatively» marked words or dysphemisms.
