Abstract

With the growth of fisheries and aquaculture, about two-thirds of the total catch of fish is discarded as waste, creating major economic and environmental challenges. Solving the problem of disposal and recycling of fish waste is crucial. Driven by the focus on the circular economy, in recent scientific studies, underutilized or discarded marine resources are additionally valorised. There are two basic guidelines: the use of waste as a raw material for the production of new biopolymer materials or the use of edible coatings to extend the shelf life of seafood thereby reducing the amount of discarded/spoiled products. In this brief review, examples of recent scientific research presented at two international congresses held at the end of 2024 are given.

Keywords
