Sažetak

The aim of this paper to analyze the fruit market in Croatia using key indicators, such as production, imports, exports, and total fruit consumption, with a particular focus on the year 2023. The results indicate an imbalance between domestic production and consumption. In 2023, the import coverage ratio was approximately 31.5%, while the level of self-sufficiency stood at only 46%. The most significant import categories include tropical fruit (especially bananas), citrus fruit, and apples, whereas exports consist primarily of apples, bananas (re-exports), and table grapes. The low level of self-sufficiency shows that the Croatian fruit market is structurally dependent on imports in the long term, which increases the vulnerability of the food-supply system and highlights the need for targeted measures to strengthen domestic production. The paper recommends increasing investment in irrigation and orchard modernization, developing short supply chains, and promoting organic production, processing, and the marketing of domestic fruit.
