Abstract

This paper presents the original archival material from the Archivio Diplomático (Diplomatic Archive) of the Biblioteca Civica (Civic Library) in Trieste - fondo Conti preliminari istriani (Istrian Preliminary Accounts). In fact, those are tabular reviews of planned income and expenditure for some twenty communes of the Istrian District for the administrative year 1847, that is, for the period between 1 November 1846 and 31 October 1847. The Istrian District was then divided into 17 administrative counties, 46 main communes and 380 sub-communes. We bring numeral data for the following communes: Baška, Buje, Buzet, Grožnjan, Kopar, Krk, Labin, Mali Lošinj, Milje (Muggia), Motovun, Novigrad, Oprtalj, Pazin, Piran, Poreč, Pula, Umag, Veli Lošinj, Vižinada and Žminj. This tabulated income and expenditure data accurately show the field and volume of activity in the Istrian communes towards the end of the first half of the 19th century. They can be classified according to their economic possibilities by studying the disposition of various clerks, or the amount of certain expenditures. So the tabular data can be very interesting also from the local history viewpoint.
