Abstract

The manuscript, written by an Istrian priest, Vincent Pikot, contains the vivid description of his part in the founding and building of the new parish churh in Grdoselo (interior Istria). Upon this main frame of a chronicle of a village in the Pazin County, the author depicts everyday life with its social and economic conditions, demographic changes, folklore and political relations of his time and his neighbourhood. Inside the manuscript of the Grdoselo Chronicle the author has incorporated his will, which contributes to work out and completes this picture. The Grdoselo Chronicle is a first-rate source for the social, economical, political and demographic history of Istria, for ethnography, toponymy and antroponymy of rural Istria in the Pazin County in the 17th century. The manuscript outlines the education, knowledge and ambitions of a village priest, his economic strength, monetary transactions, his possessions from tools and equipment in the cellar and the stable, from real property and cattle to furniture, clothing, books, pictures and hunting equipment.
