Publication Ethics and Research Integrity

In the Journal of the Istrian Archives (Vjesnik istarskog arhiva), we are committed to ensure the highest standards of ethical behaviour in all stages of the preparation and publication of articles. To that effect, we follow the best practice guidelines regarding expected ethics practice, violations of ethical standards and measures against unethical behaviour, proposed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Responsibilities of the editor in chief

The editor communicates with authors, reviewers and other members of the Editorial Board in accordance with the recommendations of the international Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). According to the recommendations of the COPE, the editor-in-chief mediates the reviewers' instructions to the authors and monitors their implementation, and implements and supervises other procedures provided for in the recommendations (redundancy, plagiarism, fraudulent data, changes in authorship or authorship problems, conflicts of interest). The editor-in-chief will exclude members of the Editorial Board from the editorial process if they are in conflict of interest (collaboration or other forms of association with authors, authorship or participation in the peer review process).

Responsibilities of the peer reviewers

The peer reviewers must treat manuscripts as confidential documents. They must be objective and constructive in their peer review and notify the editor-in-chief if they are not sufficiently qualified on the topic of the paper. They are required to inform the editor-in-chief of any potential conflict of interest in relation to the manuscript referred to them for peer review and in the event of a conflict of interest withdraw from the peer review process.

Responsibilities of the authors

Authors are responsible for the originality and authorship of their manuscript and should meet the ethical principles and rules of research integrity for authors of the European Association of Science Editors (EASE). If the authors use data and ideas of other people or their own previously published data and ideas, this should be properly referred to and cited. Authors must obtain permission to print images, documents and other materials from the copyright owners and mention the organizations, scientific projects or institutions that supported the research discussed in their article. In case of suspected unethical behaviour (plagiarism, self-plagiarism, redundancy, data manipulation, change in authorship, etc.), the Editorial Board will act in line with the recommendations of the above mentioned Committee on Publication Ethics - COPE. When sending the manuscript to the Editorial Board, the authors should submit the name order of authors. Changing of the order, deletion or rearrangement of names can be carried out before acceptance of the manuscript however subject to a written approval by all authors (e-mail, letter), under the guidelines for authors of the European Association of Science Editors (EASE). In exceptional circumstances, the Editorial Board will consider adding, deleting, or rearranging authors after the acceptance of the manuscript. Names of authors must be supplemented with the name of the institution where they worked during the research and email addresses of the authors.
