History of the Journal

The history of the publication of the Journal is closely related to the Journal of the State Archives in Rijeka. From Volume 10 to Volume 11 – 12, the title was the Journal of the Historical Archives (singular) in Rijeka and Pazin, and from Volume 13 onwards, the title was the Journal of Historical Archives (plural) in Rijeka and Pazin. Considering that the Ri­jeka Archives had jurisdiction over the entire region of Istria and the Croatian Littoral, the Journal published manuscripts and archival material both from the area of the Rijeka Dis­trict and from the area of Istria. In the mean­time, the Archives in Pazin was established and had been providing archival services in Istria for several years. Consequently, at the session of the Working Committee of the Historical Archive in Rijeka held on 12 June 1965, it was decided that from Volume 10 (1964 – 1965) on­wards the Journal would be published as a joint edition of today’s State Archives in Pazin and State Archives in Rijeka under the title Jour­nal of Historical Archives in Rijeka and Pazin.  After Volume no. 31 (1989) of the Journal, the State Archives in Pazin and the State Archives in Rijeka ceased to have joint publishing ac­tivities and the State Archives in Pazin started publishing independently. At the suggestion of the Institution’s employees and based on their assessment that there was still public interest in the Journal, the Institution continued pub­lishing the Journal under the title the Journal of the Istrian Archives (Vjesnik istarskog arhiva (VIA). The year 1991 saw the publication of the first issue of the Journal of the Istrian Ar­chives, and its publication has continued to this day. As the publication of certain years was delayed at the beginning by several calendar years (Volumes 2 – 16), sometimes two years were published to­gether as a double issue (2 – 3, 4 – 5, 6 – 7) or three numbers as a triple issue (8 – 10, 11 – 13, 14 – 16) in one volume. From Volume 17 onwards, the Journal has been published, as it was planned from the beginning of the publishing activity of the State Archives, regularly once a year. Since the Journal is published once a year, the numbering of the year (volume) and the number (issue) cor­respond. Regardless of this correspondence, the double numbering of the year and the issue number was given on the cover of Vol. 1 of the Journal. The first numbering refers to year 1991 and the publication of the first volume and issue under the new title, while the second includes the number of previ­ously published volumes and issues of the Journal of Historical Archives in Rijeka and Pazin. From Vol. 2 – 3 onwards, only the first numbering of the volume and the issue was given. Since Vol. 8 – 10 the Journal has contained only the volume identification. The volume extent of the Journal of the Is­trian Archives was stated on the cover page and on the title page of the Journal from Vol. 1 to Vol. 6 – 7, while the following is­sues do not indicate the extent neither on the cover or on the title page of the Journal.
