THE SUSTIPAN CEMETERY

Sažetak
The first cemetery outside the city of Split was founded in 1825 and was in use until 1943. Lovrinac, the new cemetery was founded in 1928. The municipal authorities, after World War II decided to close down the old cemetery at Sustipan and turn it into a public park. All the author’s efforts who at the time was director of the Split City Museum, to preserve the monumental part of the historical and picturesque old cemetery were not supported by the relevant authorities and the cemetery was barbarously pulled down in 1960 in spite of historical and artistic value of tombstones of. Only few families transferred their graves to the new cemetery.
The author of this paper listed all graves and their inscriptions, photographed them, while
a smaller number of tombstones and sculptures was deposited at the Split City Museum. The
inscriptions of all graves were published in his monograph "Sustipan – the Split Cemetery" (Split
1994) but for technical reasons, without the layout plan which is now published in this paper.
