Abstract

The main orientation of the Second Vatican Council, nicely expressed in the phrase »return to the sources«, also means a return to the early Christian ecclesial experience of the theology of sacraments. This theological approach has resulted in the Christian East and West coming substantially closer to each other in the theological sense, and this has truly put wind in the sails of the ecumenical movement. Motivated by this spirit, I present here the individual sacraments in comparative theology and praxis, especially stressing the profound communal theological Sitz im Leben of Catholic and Orthodox sacraments, notwithstanding the distinctive and unique attributes of each side. I hope that this comparison of sacraments confirms unity in diversities, and legitimate diversities in unity.
