Sažetak

In this two-part article the authors examine Ivan Merz's attitude toward the family and family values. In the first section they point out the crucial moments in Merz's personal experience of the family, his family upbringing and pro-family education. With this as a frame of reference they present the upbringing received from his parents in Banja Luka as experienced in his boyhood and youth. This is followed by an analysis of his falling in love for the first time and his understanding and experience of mature love. They then demonstrate how he influenced his own parents by educating them in the faith and urging them toward conversion. Finally, the authors do not fail to note that Ivan Merz's ideal as well as his help in educating for family values was the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the second section of the article the authors examine Merz's activities for the good of the family on the level of Orlovstvo, the lay organization of which he was head. Of interest primarily is Merz's analysis of the social environment and situation in the family at the start of the twentieth century wherein he points out a great number of destructive factors. The authors demonstrate how Merz becomes the patron of the family and family rights and values, that is to say, an advocate for a sound family social policy in precisely this sort of society. Also, he seems to be a champion of women's dignity who insists in a special way on the attributes of the fiancée and mother and does forget to speak of the proper role of the man in the family
