Sažetak
Francis A. Yates’ original interpretation of Renaissance philosophy has been constantly criticized since the 1970’s, when it first secured its »place in the sun«. These critiques most often bear on her interpretations of Giordano Bruno’s supposed »revolutionary quality«, that is, her attempt to – interpreting Bruno in the context of the reception of Hermetic writings and tradition – debunk the myth that Bruno was a martyr of modern science.
This paper is a comment on one of the recent critiques of the line of interpretation of Renaissance philosophy initiated by Francis A. Yates. The point at issue is a book by Hilary Gatti, representative in a way because it once again tries to prove – precisely through disputing the aforementioned line of interpretation – that Bruno had anticipated many of the tenets of modern science, looking for its foothold in Bruno’s texts in which he deals with »mathematics«.
Since Yates’ interpretation has had many followers, especially among the historians of Italian philosophy, who had dealt with Frane Petrić in their research in Renaissance philosophy, and whose thought has many aspects that border on Bruno’s, this paper compares the theses that deal with Bruno’s philosophy with the theses presented in some of the modern interpretations of the philosopher from Cres.
