Sažetak

While giving a brief account of matters of costume design from the history of the theatre in Croatia up to the Revival time, the paper speaks of the development of the costuming of performances and the costume design profession from the professionalisation of the Croatian theatre in the middle of the 19th century to the end of the 1910s, when in the Zagreb Croatian National Theatre, trained artists began to work as costume designers. Deserving mention as characteristics of this time are the wish for the role of the costume in the performance on stage to be acknowledged, and the desire to create realistic theatrical costumes and the stylistic and historical harmonisation of the costume in the theatre and the work being performed. Particular attention is paid to the various professions that during the nineteenth century reinforced the position of costume designer – producers, actors and wardrobe mistresses, as well as to directors who contributed to making costume design an independent artistic discipline. The work concludes by analysing the work of one of the first artists-cum-costume designers in the Zagreb National Theatre, Oton Iveković, and the collaborative effort between this theatre and art historian Antun Jiroušek.
