PERSON-CENTRED APPROACH TO INDIVIDUAL PLANNING FOR PERSONS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES IN INSTITUTIONAL CONTEXT

Sažetak
New methods in the process of planning and provision of social services develop simultaneously to the development of the social model of care for persons with intellectual disabilities and in accordance with the post-modern concepts of social work applying the principles of user perspective and cooperative relationship. Active integration of users in those processes results in a significant qualitative shift towards respecting their human and civil rights, directly influencing their quality of life and improving their social integration. The new Social Welfare Act and the introduction of social service quality standards enabled introduction of planning methods focussed on individuals and support processes helping them define their goals in achieving lifestyle they want for themselves. In the process, the role of experts has significantly changed as they have become helpers, inciting, suggesting and listening. However, the crucial role in the planning process should be played by the users. The reversal of roles can provoke numerous questions and present a challenge for most professionals. The education programmes in place for social care centres’ employees can to a significant extent resolve dilemmas and expand the understanding of the issues. Therefore it is necessary to include employees of care homes into education programmes, emphasising the need for mutual cooperation and defining the roles of both groups of social care professionals. In addition to theoretical considerations, the paper provides examples of drafting individual plans for persons with
intellectual disabilities permanently placed in care homes.
