SOCIAL IDENTITY IN CROATIA: A CONCEPT AND DIMENSIONS OF SOCIAL IDENTITY

Sažetak
In this paper the authors report on the concept and factor structure of the social identity, besides the resume of the theoretical interpretation of identity, as well as on the results of the research.
Empirical research has been carried out on the representative sample of the Croatian population (N = 1,202; 2004) within the framework of the project ‘Modernisation and Identity of the Croatian Society’. Component analysis, as well as the variation analysis, has been carried out under the GK criterion. Social identity has been defined as being dimensional and relational. Dimensionality is developed by means of the four conceptual dimensions: social, cultural, spatial and family‐native, which have been operationalized on the instrument consisting of 24 fragments. Relations of identity have been defined by means of relations toward: oneself, others, nature, God and the world. This paper treats only dimensions of social identity.
Four factors have been established, i.e. dimensions of social identity: cultural, social and professional, regional, ethnic and religious, and neighborly and locale. Distribution of frequencies have shown that the highest percentage of respondents estimates as important the feeling of belonging together with their closest relatives, the area where they were born or where they now live, family line, citizens
of Croatia and nation. The analysis of the variant has shown the preferences of respondents toward factors and fragments within the instrument (24) in relation to social and demographic features. Two characteristic generational groups have also been established: the older (over 65) and others (between 18 and 65). The older generation is more inclined to the identification with essentialistic
features of identity, while other generations attach importance to political, professional and value criteria in the process of identification with the groups.
