THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL CARE FOR THE CHILDREN IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY
Vanja Branica
Abstract
Attempting to research the history of professional activity of social workers in the area of public care for the children, the author starts with the research of various forms of interventions through which society, and later the state, tried to take care of the children. This paper deals with the activities through which society and the state took care of the children in the period from 1900-1940. Special attention is paid to institutional forms of interventions. The first part of the paper explains basic terms that are used in discussing the care for the children from the today’s perspective, parallel to the perspective of prominent thinkers from the analysed period.
The second part of the paper presents the results of the research of the original archival materials and publications about children’s homes i.e. institutions within which the care for the children was provided. The final part of the paper presents and explains the circumstances in which the state intervention in the area of care for the children was strengthened.
