Sažetak

Human skeletal remains were excavated from the archaelogical site Torčec-Cirkvišče near Koprivnica. Excavations led by the Archaeology institute from Zagreb in 2002 revealed that, with the exception of two subadult burials, the recovered remains could be dated to the period from the 14th to the first half of the 18th century. Paleodemographical and paleopathological analyses carried out in the laboratory of the Archaeology department of the Croatian academy of sciences and arts showed that the Torčec-Cirkvišče skeletal series comprises of 21 individuals (6 females, 6 males and 9 children). The average adult female age at death is 31.3 years, the average male 45.8 years. Paleodemographic analysis indicates high subadult mortality, especially of children under five years of age (subadults comprises 42.8% of the whole series). Two traumas on the lower extremities of two males are noted in the series. One is a severe fracture of the right femur accompanied with an inflammatory process (osteomyelitis), which resulted in marked (approximately 50 mm) shortening of the affected bone. Significant sex differences are present in the frequencies of alveolar bone disease and carious lesions, possibly reflecting differences in food access and the longer average male life span. Sex differences in Schmorl’s depression, vertebral and joint osteoarthritis frequencies may reflect sexual dichotomy in activity patterns. Continued research and comparison with other contemporary skeletal series from northwestern Croatia are necessary to elucidate the causes of these differences.
