Sažetak

This paper aims to describe the role of active labor market policies (ALMP) in Croatia within the European context. Recent literature about the development, tendencies and results of ALMP in Europe is resented. Using the data from available sources, primarily Croatian Employment Service about the measures, participants and expenditures of ALMP, the results from Croatia are also given. Comparative analyses of recent tendencies and guidelines from Europe and Croatian practices bring some insight into the underdevelopment of Croatian practices regarding ALMP. The analyses show that over the last two decades ALMP in Croatia were marginal in scope and financing and there is therefore a need for a stronger adjustment with European trends and new ALMP guidelines. To comply with European tendencies would mean ensuring greater levels of funding and user participation and better program design, while respecting the specificity of regional dimension and integration of evaluation as an integral part of future ALMP programs.
