Sažetak

The composition and linguistic characteristics of the little ms booklet known to scholarship as the Marulić Prayer Book are analysed. The author claimed even earlier that the main part of the prayer book ‡ the Marian Office - is characterised by graphic and linguistic layers that suggest a copy from older and more northerly Chakavian models, and that no evidence is provided for even any editorship of the text by Marulić, although Marulić’s translations of the church’s hymns are included in it. An analysis of the content of the component parts of the prayer book and their arrangement within it leads to the conclusion that the prayer book belonged to a woman (clearly a nun) who wrote it for her own needs and use, gradually adding in given texts and leaving empty spaces for further entries. Certain linguistic traits show that she was probably from Poljica by birth. The juxtaposition of the linguistic characteristics of the individual components of the prayer book show, on the one hand, their heterogeneous origin, and on the other, Marulić’s almost incontrovertible authorship of the translations of the hymns of the office, as well as one that is not part of the office entitled Jesu dulcis memoria.
