Sažetak

The modernization of primary school curriculums and the integration of natural science subjects in the curriculum content (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) will enable younger generations to preserve the natural and social environment. The study of natural science content develops awareness of the connection and complementary relations between natural sciences and technology on the one hand and the contemporary way of life on the other. Therefore, the modern society aspires to provide every individual with basic knowledge and skills in natural science, i.e., with scientifi c literacy, and to prepare him/her for lifelong learning. Scientifi c literacy can be achieved by performing various forms of practical work, which encourages students’ independence and creativity, making their own opinions, and also develops observation and perception of causeeffect relations in nature. By applying the scientifi c method of research through various forms of practical work students are trained to identify the key components of scientific research, to fi nd new solutions, to develop critical thought and to make conclusions based on evidence. With participation in practical work a student gains his/her own personal experience which is applicable in real life where scientifi c literacy becomes a demand at all levels from personal to business and social.
