Several Contributions to the Texts of the Croatian Poems by Marko Marulić
Bratislav Lučin
Sažetak
The paper first of all draws attention to several manuscript sources that have not been considered sufficiently, if at all, in the editing of Marulić’s Croatian poems in the Collected Works.
Employing the principles on which he based his textual interventions in Judith and Susanna (cf. Colloquia Maruliana XI and XII), the author proposes amendments in the reading of three poems (Spovid koludric, Poklad i Korizma, Od slavića - Nuns’ Confession, Carnival and Lent, On the Nightingale).
Carnival and Lent is published for the first time with the marginal headings that exist in the manuscript and that editors have so far completely ignored. Al-though they are short and not very numerous, they are important for three reasons: they are an inseparable part of the original text; they strengthen the thesis that Marulić wrote the poem; they throw additional light on the genre to which it belongs.
The poem On the Nightingale is in the worst condition from the textual point of view. Although Franjo Fancev did make corrections and additions to his edition, it was never printed in a proper integral form. The author of the paper then provides the first critical edition of the poem in an appendix.
If to the current author’s investigations into the texts those by Mladen Parlov concerning Marulić’s authorship of the poem Naslidovan’je Isukarsta [Imitation of Jesus Christ] (Colloquia Maruliana VI) and the textual contributions of Neven Jovanović to the Utiha nesriće [Comfort of Affliction] (Colloquia Maruliana XI) are added, it becomes obvious that the publication of Marulić’s Croatian verses in the Collected Works has not completed the work of textual establishment and attribution, and that in the foreseeable future it will be necessary to consider a new and improved edition.
