Sažetak

Physical activity is an important factor in maintaining health and functional abilities in older adults. The aim of this paper is to determine possible differences between older adults who engage in physical activities and those who do not. More specifically, differences between older adults who engage in physical activities and those who do not are related to their socio-demographic characteristics as well as their personal assessment of quality of life. Research was conducted in 2008 in the city of Zagreb on a convenient sample of 192 respondents who engage in recreational activities and 150 respondents who do not engage in recreational activities. Statistic procedures reveal differences between the respondents who are and those who are not involved in recreational physical activities with regards to their socio-demographic characteristics. The respondents who are engaged in recreational physical activities are more often female, somewhat younger on average and more educated, with no differences with regards to the economic situation. The respondents who engage in recreational physical activities express higher life satisfaction and rate their own functional abilities higher. Overall, this research confirms that physical exercise is beneficial for older adults.
