Biofilm Associated Urinary Tract Infections

Sažetak
Biofilms, complex microbial communities with a unique mode of life, currently play a dominant role in healthcare- associated infections. Biofilm-associated infections usually do not respond adequately to therapeutically achievable concentrations of antibiotics, and many alternative strategies to prevent and eradicate biofilms have been investigated. Catheter associated urinary tract infection is the most frequent and typical example of biofilm and no catheter capable of resisting encrustation by biofilm has been developed so far. The author summarizes the mechanisms of biofilm formation in the urinary tract and different approaches to the prevention and treatment of associated infections.
