Sažetak

Trends in Bioplastics was the second international conference organized
within the frame of the PLASTiCE project (Innovative
Value Chain Development for Sustainable Plastics in Central Europe).
The conference was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia on September
17-18th 2012 and was attended by more than 80 participants from 11
countries that could follow 25 presentations. The Conference was
co-organized by Slopak and the National Institute of Chemistry, both
from Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The conference fi nished with a round table discussion that touched
the topics of terminology (the appropriateness of the term bioplastics),
the problem of limited availability of technical information in
the market, and a surprisingly weak use of LCA and waste treatment
arguments for the support of bioplastics argumentation. Biobased
materials are increasingly gaining importance, biodegradability is
not the most important feature any more, only in some applications.
Finally, it does not matter if something is biodegradable or compostable,
what matters is – will it be biodegraded or composted.
A general conclusion of the conference was that the event gave a
relevant overview of the situation and open issues in the fi eld and
that the PLASTiCE project fi lls a niche of unbiased promotion that
is otherwise not covered in a suffi ecient way.
