Encyclopedias from the department of museum publication in the Museum of Slavonia Osijek

Sažetak
Encyclopaedias attempt to gather the whole knowledge
which has an invaluable significance in the development
of mankind in one place. Throughout its long history
the Museum of Slavonia in Osijek has gathered various old
and valuable material and thus encyclopaedic editions. In
the Department of museum publications there are 16 such
encyclopaedic editions which emerged from the beginning
of the 19th century until the end of the World War II. The
Croatian encyclopaedias by Ivan Zoch and Mate Ujević
characterized the Croatian linguistic history because they
are the first Croatian encyclopaedias, that prompted the
creation of similar editions. The Croatian encyclopaedia by
Mate Ujević is an example of the first Croatian encyclopaedia
that, although incomplete due to political reasons,
served model to our other encyclopaedias. Our first lexicon
of great significance, the Minerva lexicon emerged out of
need for domestic reference books of that kind. It should
have served as a basis for development of further general
encyclopaedic reference books that would suit domestic
needs thus replacing foreign reference books. The most
significant European encyclopaedic reference books from
the 19th century have also been presented; they are known
as models of the German language encyclopaedias – the
Brockhaus and the Meyers, as well as the first Austrian national
encyclopaedia. Those are the works which cannot be
found in large number in the Croatian libraries but the Department
of museum publications holds even a number of
these editions and reissues. The encyclopaedic editions in
the department are still topical due to a large amount of old
material which is suitable to that time. Thus, such works
do not age for us librarians-museum workers, but become
more valuable as books (librarian holdings) and items (museum
material).
