Sažetak

Using the commercial materials of various manufacturers (Meliodent,
Bayer, U.K.; Acron, GC, Japan) polymethylmethacrylate specimens
were made*by heat curing, cold curing and by microwave polymerization. In the investigation the success o f the polymerization (residual monomer level - RM) was tested by gas chromatography (Carlo Erba instr., Milan, Italy) and by infrared (IR) spectrophotometry (Perkin Elmer, Beaconsfield, U.K.). RM was released from the polymeric matrix by extraction and a method o f dissolution. The extraction was performed with methanol, and dissolution with chloroform. The results obtained by extraction of RM
were considerably lower (from 0.0 do 0.57%) than the results obtained by dissfolution (form 0.36 to 3.05%), which demonstrates the significantly higher effectiveness o f the dissolution procedure for releasing RM .The comparability of the gas chromatography results and published results obtained by IR spectrophotometry are discussed. The difference in the data obtained by the two analytical methods is not significant. With regard to RM criteria, heat polymerization proved to be the best o f the applied polymerization procedures. Cold polymerized acrylates showed considerably higher RM content, while the level of RM in the microwave-polymerized specimens ranged between those two groups o f values.
