Sažetak
This article interprets the results of an empirical study of attitudes, values and free time activities
of the women in Split-Dalmatia County of Croatia. The empirical research, in which
800 women were interviewed, was set out to compare the eve1yday life and values of the
women in the hinterland of the city of Split, in the coast area and on the islands.
Research results indicate different mixtures of sets of values in the predominantly rural
hinterland areas and on the islands. The values of island women are predominantly
postmodern-modern, while the values of the hinterland women are premodern-modern.
The values of the hinterland women can be explained by the rural and culturally traditional
character of their surroundings. The island women share the fundamental Catholic
patriarchal paradigm with the rural hinterland women, as well as the tradition of hierarchical
authority characteristic of farm co-operative value system and a more recent collectivist
socialist value system. However, they were historically closer to urban lifestyles, had better
standards of living in the era of the tourist growth and were also exposed to the lifestyle
influences brought about by tourism.
Where they exist, the elements characteristic of post-industrial modernization are relatively
weak. While the active approach to one's free time is ever-more important in the post-industrial
societies, the analysis of behavior of island women indicates predominantly modern
approach to free time. In our opinion, the elements of post-industrial modernization
can hardly reach the level at which they could start a large-scale behavioral change, and
result in a change of the forms of social integration in the near future.
