Sažetak
The presence o f Streptococci and. Staphylococci in the tooth root canal during endodontic procedure, and the probability o f tertiary bacterial contamination o f the root canal, along with the efficacy o f disinfection on endodontic treatment, were studied in 73 teeth o f the intercanine region. Sample (n=292) collection was performed using the dry point paper technique, whereas standard microbiologic methods were used for microbiologic testings.Streptococcal infections with Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus viridans, Streptococcus haemolyticus non A and Streptococcus pyogenes, equally spread in the root canal in both pulp and periapex infections, were the most frequent cause o f dental pathology. Besides the known pathogenicity o f Staphylococcus aureus, the less pathogenic Staphylococcus epidermidis was also found to be a potential source o f pulp infection.
Among gram negative microorganisms, Escherichia coli was observed to induce the pulp and periodontal pathology. With the described tooth preparation for endodontic procedure, the possibility o f contamination was found to be quite high (30.64%), pointing to, the need o f the use o f cofferdam in endodontics, with previous profesional removal o f dental plaques.
