The Assesment of Antibiotic Efficiency in Therapy of Acute Odontogenic Infections

Sažetak
Complications that may occur consequentially to odontogenic infection make antibiotics an important back-up o f surgical therapy. Promptness o f their use requires preliminary empiric therapy to allow them to be readily chosen, not awaiting for antibiogram results. In this study, isolation o f most frequent agents causing odontogenic infection in the samples examined and determination o f antibiograms for antibiotics most commonly used in Croatia, were used to find the most appropriate antibiotic for odontogenic infection therapy. A ll antibiotics under study were found to have similar antimicrobial spectrum. When some additional parameters, such as side- -effects, mechanism o f action and chemical structure, were also considered in choosing the antibiotic, Benzilpenicillin (penicillin G) was found to be the drug o f choice. In patients sensitive to penicillin G, Erythromycin was observed to be a quite acceptable exchange.
