Sažetak

The triangular Glagolitic script consisting of sectors of a circle is considered to be the oldest Glagolitic type, different from the more recent rounded type consi - sting of circles. The remnants of the triangular type can be seen in some Croatian, Moravian and Macedonian 10th or 11th century Glagolitic sources. The fact that the rounded type originated from Ohrid School where the triangular type was known indicates that the transformation of triangular into the rounded type might have taken place there. Greek Archbishop Homatian wrote that St. Clement had made character forms clearer than those created by St. Cyril. This reform by St. Clement may well be the transformation of triangular into clearer rounded type. The question is if the rounded type is indeed clearer than the triangular type. The research results have shown so far that the syllables of the rounded type are more readable, therefore are clearer, than the syllables of the triangular type. The research on learning both types also affirms that the rounded type is clearer because it may be learned more easily. The research was carried out with 30 participants who were learning the Glagolitic script using a special computer program by trial and error. According to the number of series needed to reach the expected level of knowledge for both Glagolitic types, and according to the number of mistakes made during the learning process, there is no statistically relevant difference in the duration of the learning process, but there is a difference in the number of mistakes made. There are statistically much less mistakes made in the process of learning the rounded type. This difference may be explained by greater noticeability of the rounded type characters according to the rules of gestalt. The characters consisting of circles stand out more against the background than those consisting of triangles. Greater distinctiveness of circles helps in distinguishing and encoding the rounded Glagolitic characters.
