THE EFFECT OF 40 HZ SOUND WAVE VIBRATION ON SPASTICITY AND MOTOR FUNCTION IN CHILDREN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY

As the motor system relies heavily on deep sensory stimulation, recent studies have investigated the effect of vibration stimuli. Although research suggests a positive influence of vibration on motor performance in individuals with neurologic disorders, there is very limited number of studies in children with cerebral palsy. The primary objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of sound wave vibration therapy on spasticity and motor function in children with cerebral palsy. The second objective was to investigate the nature and strength of relationship between change in spasticity level and motor outcome. In this 3-month trial, 89 children with spastic cerebral palsy were randomized to either continue their physiotherapy treatment or to receive vibration therapy twice a week in addition to their physiotherapy treatment program. The randomization was stratified according to Gross Motor Function Classification System level to ensure similar functional ability in both study groups. The outcome measures were spasticity level in upper and lower limb as assessed by Modified Modified Ashworth Scale and gross motor function as assessed by global changes in Gross Motor Function Measurement. Significant group differences were detected for changes in spasticity level and gross motor function after the three-month intervention. There was a clear and statistically significant association between changes in spasticity and motor outcome. In conclusion, vibration therapy may decrease spasticity and improve motor performance in children with cerebral palsy. The results obtained serve as valuable input for evidence-based treatments in pediatric neurorehabilitation.
