Sažetak
The recently discovered painting by Oton Postružnik »Landscape with Houses and a Lake,«1924-25, puts under a new light the artist’s contacts with André Lhote, in whose school of painting Postružnik studied for a short time upon his coming to Paris after graduation.
Until now, no Postružnik painting from his first stay in Paris (1924-25) has been known, so it was impossible to judge Lothe’s influence on Postružnik’s artistic formation.
In spite of that, Postružnik was included in the exhibition of André Lhote and his Yugoslav pupils in Belgrade in 1974, however, with a totally inadequate painting (»Klek,« 1929). From a 1925 letter from Paris to I. Tabaković one gathers that Postružnik had completed one oil painting and left it in Paris for the »Salon d’automne.« The painting was considered lost.
Finally in the summer of 2008 the painting was found in a private collection in Vienna, signed: »O. POSTRUŽNIK, PARIS«. The painting undoubtedly belongs to Postružnik’s early phase, as manifest form the most elementary stylistic analysis showing that the artist had not liberated himself from the post-cubist manner of A. Lhote, which was obviously an important component in the formation of Postružnik’s firm volumes of neo-realistic connotation,
and which, as one of the four founders (Hegedušić, Junek, Postružnik, and Tabaković) he brought to the »Zemlja« group.
