Pathological processes in the oral mucosa and changes of its permeability to the lipid composition in saliva

Sažetak
Pathological processes in the oral mucosa are closely related to the
penetration of damaging substances from the outside and from within the organism, and to any disturbance of its nutrition. Lipids in the oral epithelial membrane play a significant role in this process. The authors examined the concentration and quality of lipids in the saliva of 30 patients and 30 healthy persons to explain the parallel occurrence of pathological processes in the mouth and the amount of lipids in saliva. More free fatty acids were detected in the saliva of patients than in healthy persons. In healthy persons, neutral fats were more frequently observed. Cholesterol was not found in any saliva sample from a healthy person, but was observed in 40% of the saliva of patients.
